Whites Drive-In
During the 1950s and 60s dancing was very popular with high schoolers and they had plenty of choices. You could usually find dancing being held at Wenonah Hotel ballroom, St. James gymnasium, roller skating rink at Bay City State Park, and a few others. Adults had the casino out at Wenona Beach and many taverns with dance floors to go to.
Dance and music television shows were also very popular. The teens favorite was Dick Clark's American Bandstand where teens danced to the top pop songs of the day, and up and coming pop singers appeared. On the other hand, mom and pop tuned into show by Perry Como, Liberacy, Dina Shore, Lawrence Welk, etc. Musical movies were very popular back then. Top singers appeared like Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and others appeared in many of them.
While the music of composers and singers may be different today, music remains as popular as ever. It's hard to imagine what life would be like without it!
