Venerable Aged Coupled Honored Mr Fred Arnold and wife who have been living in Bay City, Michigan for the last 61 years honored by their fellow citizens. Bay City, Michigan, November 9th The Venerable couple Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Arnold who have been living here for the past 61 years were honored by the Pioneer Committee with the presentation of a Loving Cup which came from Bavaria, where Mr. Arnold was born in Ortenburg 1834, and his wife whose maiden name was Louise Mueller was born in the same place October 1831. Both coming at the same time to Bay City at that time known as Lower Saginaw with a population of only 250 people. They were married Sept 13 1857 by the Rev Bolz. Mr. Arnold, who is now 81 years old and still active and in good health has been successfully conducting a bakery here for many years and is still in operation. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold are held in high esteem in the community and now live in retirement." "Bay County Past and Present", by George Butterfield, is considered by Bill Harrington, President of the Bay County Genealogical Society, to be the best history book in the state. On page 58, he speaks of Frederick and his travel to Bay City: "Mr. & Mrs. Frederick Arnold, who in 1915 were awarded the semi-centennial Silver Loving Cup on account of having lived together in Bay City longer than any other couple, also came by boat from Detroit." On page 144: "Arnold's Bakery on Saginaw Street, established in 1856 by Frederick Arnold, is the county's second oldest business and is still run by the Arnold family." (written in 1957) On page 177 he spoke of fires in Bay City: "Then on Sunday, October 8, 1865, came another in the center of town that was stopped only after dynamiting some buildings that lay in it's path. The only buildings left standing from Saginaw Street to the river, between Center and Fifth Streets, were Fred Arnold's home and bakery." "The Bay City Story" by Les Arndt, 1982: Page 315: "The Arnold Bakery in the late 1970s was recognized as the oldest bakery in Michigan (1856) and the oldest business in Bay City in continuous operation under one-family ownership." Page 316-317: "The Arnold Baking Co., the state's oldest bakery, had its origin when Frederick G. Arnold arrived in the United States from Germany in 1854 at the age of 22. He had wanted to settle in Detroit, then a settlement of less than 100,000. But when the vessel reached after a 70-day Atlantic crossing, a severe cholera outbreak was raging there, so the cruiser continued on to Port Huron. "After employment in lumber camps to build a nest egg, young Arnold established his first bakery in 1856 in the Watson blacksmith shop on the corner of what is currently Center Avenue and Water Street. "A fire soon destroyed that shop, and the concern was relocated at the corner of Saginaw and Fifth. From there, this baker finally moved to the present quarters, just south, at 815 Saginaw Street. "As the city grew, so did the bakery. In those years, bread was shipped throughout the state in wooden barrels. Area service featured a fleet of horse-drawn bread wagons. In 1892, Arnold turned the business over to his two sons, Godfrey A. and John G., and it has continued in the family. Frederick Arnold, as last president, had spent 61 of his 78 years with the firm. "It was the mall shopping, mass production and competitive prices that changed Arnold Bakery finally to a wholesale outlet for area restaurants only. At peak production, the bakery produced 2,000 to 3,000 loaves of bread, and comparable amounts of cakes, pies and cookies per day. 'We often used about 100 100-pound sacks of flour in one week.', says Arnold. "Historians report that Indians were among the patrons of the original Arnold Bakery, and that Arnold early made trips to Saginaw to buy flour at $8 a barrel. The Bay City price was $17." ************************************************************** The 1900 US Census MI Soundex A654, Vol 6, ED 45, Sheet 5, Line 26: Arnold, Frederick, White, age 66, born Dec 1843 (should be 1834) in Germany, 610 Park Ave, Bay City, Bay Co Arnold, Louise, Wife, age 68, born Oct 1841 (should be 1831) in Germany , Matilda, Dau, age 22 (should be 32), born June 1877 (should be 1867) in Mich ************************************************************** Obituary from the Bay City Times Tribune, June 7, 1924: FRED G. ARNOLD, 70 YEARS IN CITY, DEAD Came to Bay City from Germany in 1854; Opened First Bakery Frederick G. Arnold, one of the oldest settlers of Bay City, passed away Friday night at 11 o'clock at the home of his son, John G. Arnold, corner of Monroe and Sixth streets, after an illness of about six months. Mr Arnold was born in Bavaria, Germany, December 7, 1834, and if he had lived until the coming December, would have been ninety years of age. Mr. Arnold came to Bay City June 5, 1854, and took a position in the saw mill of John and William McEwan. There was not then a sewer or pavement in the city, and not more than a half a dozen sidewalks. In 1856 Mr. Arnold established the first bakery in Bay City, at the corner of Fifth and Saginaw streets, which he operated for thirty years under the name of the "Old Bakery," and then turning the business over to his sons, retired to a well-earned life of ease and comfort. At the home-coming celebration in Bay City a few years ago, Mr. Arnold and his wife, who died in July, 1922, were awarded the silver loving cup for being the oldest married couple in Bay City. Mr. Arnold was always held in the highest esteem by his friends and acquaintances, owing to his integrity and uprightness. Of his children, six survive. They are: Gottfried, of Laurium, Michigan; John G. of Bay City, Mrs. H. C. Tresselt, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Mrs. J. A. Schirmer, of Saginaw, Mrs. T. G. Seemeyer, of Detroit, and Mrs. George H. Watrous, of Bay City. The time of the funeral, which will be private, has not been set
